i found what looks to be a suitable substitute. i am going to pull my pawl today and looks like the center shaft hole is going to have to be reamed-out to fit the nissan post but other dimensions appear to be essentially correct. omc number 0203698 or look it up under a 1974 evinrude 25 hp.

it works !

had to drill out the hole for the center post to 21/64" and file a little off the back edge to allow it to swing out a bit more to engage the flywheel but it works fine. i actually didn't just drill out the center hole but drilled off to one side of the existing hole with a press, not going outside the lines of the exixting hole. i used a new bit and went very slowly so as to offset the new bigger hole as far back toward center of the pawl as i could...(more in-line with where the oem pawl hole was). it cost $2.00 so i guess i'll get another one, modify it, and put it to spare. hope whoever needed the pawl finds this.... william~

While on the subject ...

... of Nissans and pawls, thought I'd pass along a tip that might help other OB newbies. If it's not catching consistently when you pull the starter rope, yank the starter assembly off (easy job -- three bolts and the rod that blocks starting attempts while in gear), and crank on that big bolt right in the middle for all you're worth. I tried tightening it a couple of times, but it seemed tight and so I just exercised the whole mechanism a little and it would work OK for a few months. Finally overcame my phobia of overtightening things and got that bolt to go maybe another 16th of an inch, and now that pawl pops out perfectly every time. And thanks for the info, William. Mac
