Peggy, This year I am Commodore of Hunter Sailing Association Station One. I am encourging our members to write to their legislators about pending legislation. A number of us have Lectra/Sans and look forward to using them to help keep the Chesapeake Bay clean for years to come. I understand that there is proposed federal legislation regarding no discharge zones. Where do we get more info on this? To which legislators/committees should we address our views? BTW, I saw your post suggesting using the sbo.com directories to get your e-mail. My search for these directories failed. Best I got was a Small Business Office nationwide directory.

Pending legislation

There are only two very small "no discharge" zones on the whole Chesapeake Bay (see the MD DNR map at http://www.dnr.state.md.us/boating/pumpout/ndz.pdf for their locations), and there is no pending federal or state legislation to change that. The legislation pending in Congress would do just the opposite. HR 1027, known as the "Saxton Bill" because its author is Rep Jim Saxton (R-NJ), who happens to be a sailor. Itwould make Type I and II MSDs legal for use in ALL coastal waters, including those designated "no discharge." You can read the bill in its entirety at http://www.theorator.com/bills108/hr1027.html Environmental extremists backed by pumpout equipment mfrs have kept it bottled up in committee for 5 years. Your members should write their own Representatives and Senators to request their support for it. Do NOT draft a form letter and have everyone send it...after the first one is opened, the rest just go into the trash unread. Do NOT email them...emails only end up in a clerk's file instead of on the desk of the person who needs to read it. Each person should write their own letter to their own members of Congress and send them via USPS. Apparently you're not aware that all these sites are under one "umbrella:" sailboatowners.com (which I abreviated sbo.com) You only had to search the "Owner Directory" on the homepage of the Hunter Owners (or any of the others) site to find me.
