Obviously that depends on where your at. In FL the season is not over
On the Chesapeake I have to say it depends still some good days left Im sure

Mike - I am really enjoying the Chesapeake. I've learned a lot this season. The sailing was pretty good all summer. The marina I am at is really nice. I've also met some great people. There is so much to see and do, I just wish I had more time for it!

My Parents said it was over!
Mother Nature and Father Time have decided that we all pack it in for the season and go to bed early. It is cold, rainy & dark north of the 49th with few if any opportunities to get out there. It is going to be a long winter.

nancy and I got out today for a little ride up to port Deposit(Baimbridge for you old navy types). Light wind out of the south.
Just Got Back In
At sunset. It was in the low 70's, had about 4 to 5 knots of true wind. The river was so peaceful as the day faded away. Went down to check on the boat about 2:45 and it was beautiful.
Jumped aboard, fired up the diesel , cast off the lines and was gone.
Wowie, there won't be many days like this one left this year

Manny, I'm sure you've just scratched the surface. We delayed coming down to the bay due to all the false rumors about the hot, windless summers. So glad we did though. We just finished up our 8th year and also just took delivery of a new 08 Beneteau 43. We'll be keeping it in Baltimore come spring which will expand our cruising grounds dramatically. For the 2nd year in a row we laid more than 1000 miles under our keel and found that we had great weather and decent wind on almost every trip. We spent countless nights out on the hook enjoying grilled meals, cold drinks and starry nights. This winter will find me laying out trips to both familiar as well as unseen destinations. We can't wait for Spring. Enjoy yourself and spend as much time on the water as you can. It just can't be beat.

Still not over!
Got another sail in today :dance: It was nice to see quite a few other sailboats out enjoying bay. It was gusty so I only sailed with the genny. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't going faster than 4 knots until I tried to tack - my steering was real light and unresponsive so I tried a gybe which also didn't work out well. It reminded me of how the boat responds in the marina when the rudder fouls with all the aquatic vegetation. I looked at the outboard and it was heavily covered with plant life

Manny, we did an overnight to HdG late summer and hooked some of the grass on the keel on the way back out. I tried every trick I could think of to shake it but it hung on tight. If finally let go after a couple of tacks. Nice to see you got out again. We were tempted to go out yesterday but we're in a marina with marginal water at low tide and I didn't want to risk getting hung up.

Mike, funny thing, after we got back to the marina, one of my dock neighbors that has a pretty big ketch pulled in and I was talking to him. Without me saying anything he said he had a great sail but he had difficulty steering, especially tacking. I let him know about the grass and he was surprised. Later looking at the front of his boat I noticed that the shroud (sorry I don't know the proper term) that runs up from the waterline at the bow to the bow sprit had a clump of grass stuck to it! Gave us a good chuckle.

You gotta tilt the silver thing up every now and then...
Every time I went down the Bay and back across the Flats this past season I spent a lot of time dodging both crab pot floats and clumps of grass.
Bringing the race boat up the NE River under power after one race we suddenly felt the boat's speed drop in half. We came to a stop, backed up and veered off back under way, leaving a huge clump of grass to come to the surface.
Have only seen this much grass floating after major storm washes from down the Susq. previously. Maybe we can blame it on Al Gore and the Global Warming he invented...

I have to take my mooring and floating dock out of the water on Lake Wallenpaupack by Dec 1st (power company mandated) and will probably quit for the season then. I might drop the boat in off the trailer for a winter sail , but if not the next sail will be late March or early April in the Florida Keys or Bimini. I hope you all had a great season whether it was long or short.
