I just returned from the BVI's and 8 days of warm, beautiful, splendid sailing. I was shocked when a saw the house being built on the North side of Peter Island. They totally scarred the side of the hill. What was once a buitiful island is forever disfigured!! Who is the "ass" who owns the house?

...someone that is well connected. Blame the government for allowing this to happen. They make a big fuss about anchoring and then let this sort of pollution happen.

"buitiful island" LOL Are you sure its not a Hotel or resort of some sort? Also didn't some Rock Star from the "Who" or "Rolling Stones" have something built on the cliff near the Peter Island Resort. Maybe its Bransen's (sp?) The guy who owns Virgin Atlantic

This year we did things a little differently. In past years we tried to hit all the islands. This year we only went to 4 areas and really enjoyed things much more. We went to Norman, Peter, Cooper and Virgin Gorda. Areas we enjoy: Cooper Island - Manchareel Bay (usually a little rolly) Great restaurant and beautiful area. Norman - The Bight: good anchorage, good restaurant. The Willy-T has great food but don't anchor too close to either restaurant; they party well into the night and it can be loud. Peter - Geat Harbor, Little Harbor and Key bay are all good quite anchorages. Virgin Gorda - The best food we had was the Friday night seafood buffet at the Yacht Club!!! We ate for 2 hours. A truely beautiful area. Best snorkeling: we like the Indians off Norman or Peter and The Baths. We do NOT like Spanish Town on VG. The Rock Cafe was the worst food we had and the most expensive. At the Baths, take the trail on the right side of the small beach and follow it to the back side. Great spot! Have fun!!!!

I really enjoyed the VIs. Some great spots we visited this time: Gorda Sound/Bitter End Yacht Club: Definitely a must see. Monkey Point on Guana Island: Some of the best snorkeling. They have several new mooring balls. The Indians: Probably the best snorkeling and dive spot in the BVI. Also, worth a trip to check out St. Johns if you can, just across from the West End. I didn't bother clearing in/out as I was just anchoring. Went to Waterlemon Cay. Very good snorkel spot. Jost Van Dyke is nice. If you have never been to Foxy's, then it is a must stop. Just to say you've been there. Cane Garden Bay: Great white sand beach and calm anchorage. The restaurants get rocking at night. Hope you enjoy your trip. Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560

Cane Garden Bay was the only place that we hit that we couldn't stay. Certainly anything but calm. As we approached from the North, I saw these figures in the water...which turned out to be surfers! We came in and grabbed a ball(no easy task in the rolling harbor) and ate lunch. By the time we finished lunch, we decided that there was no way we could sleep there that night, and went over to Jost again. (Landing a dinghy would have been impossible as well.)

The governments down here, including the U.S.V.I. Territorial, are generally corrupt, and often openly so. Issues arise, then, miraculously, disappear. Living here, you ignore the ignorance and enjoy the beauty of what you have. The BVI has absolutely nailed the USVI and taken away 80% of the charter business and are now, through new, fairly corrupt and often selectively applied, fishing laws, trying to steal the charter fishing fleet from the USVI. The USVI government couldn't care less, same as they did with the sail charter fleet. Millions in revenues, gone due to ignorance. Just enjoy what you've got, and try to charter in the USVI with Island Yacht, CYOA, etc., if you can do it. The Spanish Virgins are beautiful, and you can take the boats to the BVI, clearing in appropriately, etc. Gotta head for the boatyard and finish off the refit. Asta langusto. VIEXILE (ex MAINEAC)

Ya gotta be kidding? Corruption in island politics? Geez, the US VI died many years ago. Haven't been to the Spanish VIs. BVIs are great. Do we think, perhaps, that when the construction is done that it will look like nothing has been built? Do you really think they'll leave this great scar? Or perhaps just prohibit anchoring so you can't see it? C'mon, lighten up, there are plenty of other places within the islands to go to. Don't like it? Just pass it by. People in glass houses.....
