Who Pays for this???

Jim: A quick question on the commissioning process. The compass on my 460 was way off... 10-12degrees North South and 8-10 east west. I advised the dealer of this and he arranged to have it swung. When the compass adjuster left the boat he asked me for $145.00 for the job. It seems to me that an accurate compass should be part of the commissioning process. Shouldn't the dealer be paying for this?Mark Johnson

Mark:When we took delivery of our H410 in May, our dealer had us sign a disclaimer that the compass was not swung, and that we were responsible for getting it done, at our own cost. This was due to the location deviations - delivery location versus home port/sailing location. Of course, the dealer did offer the name of someone to do the work but we took delivery of the boat a few hundred miles from her home port. If you go back through the two-foot stack of paperwork that your dealer handed you on delivery, I think you'll find this disclaimer. Ours was in the delivery checkout folder./cs/v Twilight

Mark, you need to read your contract usually I wouldn't try to respond to this type of question. Compass adjustment and all items regarding the commisioning of a vessel is between you and your dealer. The manufacturer does not dictate dealer commisioning of a vessel. The contract for the services and its parameters is set in the contract between the buyer and seller. We don't even install the compass at the plant. Hence the reason for the title of my response. I will not get involved in issues regarding contracts between you and your dealer in a public forum...period ever...JB
