Whisker poles are so expensive, surely there are competetors in this market.. I don't want to make my own.

Carbon for the price of aluminum

Try forte RTS http://www.forterts.com/ I had them make a carbon whisker pole for our boat. Very happy with the results and it was about the same price as aluminum.
