No beer until the gun sounds

I know that can be during the race but I usually take the gun ;-)

my hot racer friend

According to my friend the port tacked boat is clearly at fault.

I still like the way motorcycle racers do it

If you are racing a motorcycle, and someone has "your dirt" you just knock him out of the way, if you can and you have the cajones. This is considered to be fair play, even though there have been words spoken later.

While you're at it, please help me

understand just why this is not a windward leeward situation. Thanks, Goerge and Joseph.

Windward/Leeward

Windward/leeward applies when both boats are on the same tack.

Stu , Higgs nailed it

Most rules people talk about are for boats that meet in open water, like starboard over port and leeward over windward, and then there are rules for starting, rules for rounding marks, and rules for transitional circumstances like tacking too close and changing course. In the video the rounding was complete and had starboard steadied up immediately it would be treated as a port/starboard, but in a transitional situation port doesn't know how he can avoid starboard because starboard is still turning. The bottom line is that you don't have the right to turn into another boat even if you will have right of way, unless, when you stopped your turn and gained the right of way, you are far enough away from the give-way boat, to allow him to get and stay clear (in a seamanship manner). I really hoped that Higgs had the protest results to help explain that, but such is life. Joe S

Both

What fun! Rules are framed to AVOID collisions. You cannot just steam straight into another boat just because you are the stand on vessel. Likewise the port tack boat was the give way vessel. IMHO - Both DSQ. The outcome of a protest case seems irrelevant because it looks as if neither can continue.

the outcome of the protest hearing is almost always relevant...

...in determining which guy has to pay the insurance deductable. By the way, the rules of the road (also known as the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, IRPCS) are framed to avoid collisions. The racing rules of sailing (RRS), conversely, are framed to provide tactical advantage. Those who think the RRS provide the same degree of safety as the IRPCS had best stick to cruising.

and the winner is...

check the sail number of the lead boat on the video, and then read the results here: http://www.gbr.international14.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=97

e mail

I emailed the club who hosted the race and have asked them for the results of the protest. I will let the board know when/if I get a reply.
