I am looking to buy a "new to me" boat on the coast and will need to transport it to the lake we sail in. Here is my question: Who is responsible for taking the mast down and steping it at the destination? Am I responsible for making those arrangememnts or is the person doing the transport? The reason I ask is my 1st boat was a Cat22 and the guy hauling it from Austin to Dallas did everything, but it was a "trail sailboat". He delivered, stepped and launched. How is it different on a boat that is 30foot? Also, it is important to add that there is no "yard" at the destination. Please help clear my mind!!!

When I owned a small daysailor I would step and unstep the mast myself,I was younger and the boat was smaller. Now I have this 26 ftr and I have unstepped on my own with 2 other people present but ownly once did I do that. I might add that this boat could be trailored but I do not own a trailor for it. We have the boat hauled in the spring and again in the fall,he is responsible for the hauling and setting the boat on the hard ,we are responsible for the cement blocks and the lumber neccessary to set the boat. He sets the boat and uses our stuff to chock it. Inso far as removing the mast we have a yard do that for us and he folds the sails for storage.The same yard stepps the mast in the spring after we get the boat to them. I suppose every locale has differences depending on demand,however I would be sure that on a 30 ftr I would think that you may have a tall mastand would need a boom rig to set that and to ahve it dock tuned. Check for refences from whoever you have haul the boat and ask them if they typically do this sort of install.

I would think you need to arrange unstepping and stepping the mast, the transporter just transport it on a 30 footer. But you need to check all that out with the transporter or some one at your lake might help with your questions.

Hay RG, What lake are you going to in Dallas? There are different game plans at different lakes. I am at Lake Ray Hubbard and there is a great Catalina dealer that will help you here (Inland Sailing). But generaly the long haul guys will dump the boat and run. The mast on a C-30 is around 300 lbs so it is not as simple as the mast on your C-22

Good guy, great driver, punctual,(ex-brother-in-law) but if I were you, do everything you can before he gets the boat and have him drop it off, and you finish it. These guys are not sailors and really don't understand rigging at all! Just a thought, r.w.landau

My experience
It was 25 years ago - or more when I twice transported a boat by semi. The driver was only responsible for pick up and delivery - nothing more. The boat needed to be ready for transport when he picked it up and all he did was drop it off. Everything else was my responsibility. I personally prepared the boat for its first trip and met it at the destination, but for the return trip, I had to rely on the yard in Nassau, TX to prepare the boat. They did not winterize the engine, as they agreed to do, and I was lucky that when it froze only a freeze plug needed to be replaced. You can imagine how I felt at spring start up when water literally poured out in a stream from the back side of the engine. Freeze plugs are wonderful things and are cheap and easy to install. If possible, I like to be there whenever anything is done to my boat - launching, storage, mast stepping - you name it. No one cares like you do. If you are always there you end up learning a lot about how all this stuff should be done.

I changed the oil and the yard winterized it.The driver never checked the rig and it traveled 200 Mils laying in the cradle.I realy wanted to see some thing holding it on .The boat sits on a coustem cradle with straps frount and back ,and a strap holding the keel on the rig.The driver drops the boat on blocks and drives away.The yard takes over from there .You pay all the way.I even by lunch, coffee, beer, what ever it takes to get the guys moveing your way . John

Thank you for the insight. I have a guy in mind who also happens to be a sailor. I just wanted to be sure I had some knowledge as to procedures before I start looking like a foll and shove my foot in my mouth. My biggest obstacle is the lake I will be keeping the boat does not have a lot to cater to sailboat owners.
