Whitworth Spanner

What the dickens is a "Whitworth Spanner" and do I really need them
(5/8" and 3/4") for the Combi Overhaul or can I use a good old Sears
Craftsman wench..err..wrench?

What about the Allen bolts? Will "yank" allen wrenches work? Or do
I need something that has traveled across the pond?

I did a search on google. Seems Whitworth was a British standad.

"Whitworth...an early attempt to standardise threads and spanner
sizes. The size of a whitworth spanner refers to the thread not the
measurement of the bolt head.Phased out in the 60's officially no
longer used after 1965,but some manufacturers carried on using it on
some applications much later than this."

I have 4 sets of metric allen keys. Just enough as I seem always to
misplace them. Pretty near all the bolts, nuts and so on are now
metric on cars save for owner serviced stuff like wheelnuts.

I am replacing our engine in our Vega. I was going to cut th shaft in
two. A fellow Vega owner was horrified. I told him if he takes it off
it is his. It took him 4 1/2 hours!

Good luck on taking it out

Hi Chris

You really need the exact spanners as an adjustable is usuallu too large to
get
in amongst it! They are actually metric bolts but an unusual size so we have
found over the years that the whitworth spanners fit exactly. Adjustable
spanners have been used in the past but make sure it is not a cheap one that
undos otherwise it will round off the nut and then you will be in the s***

The Allen Bolts will use a standard imperial Allen Key that should be
available
over in your side of the pond. I dont know the exact size but if it is a
problem I will dig one out that fits and send it to you.
