White smoke

I have a 1989 H28 with a 18HP Yanmar Diesel. Last time I used the motor, white smoke was coming out of the exhaust area. I figured it was a small problem with the fuel and continued to monitor it. After motoring for 20+ min my "engine hot" alarm went off. I checked to make sure water was flowing thru the engine, there was no problem there. I let the engine sit for a while and ran it again. The same problem came back 5-10min later. Any ideas? The oil dip stick was giving me readings on the high side of "norm" for oil level.

steam?

My guess is that you may have been mistaking steam for white smoke. Most boats with wet exhaust systems will steam when they begin to overheat. Since you said that you have ample water flowing through, my guess is that the exhaust system itself might have lost efficiency. Start by checking your heat exchanger.

Coolant Level

Matt - Check your coolant level on the internal cooling system (the one with anti-freeze in it). If it is low, you can get the overheat alarm even if water is flowing through the engine in the external system. Did the white smoke continue from start-up through shut-down? Make sure...

...that you are getting good water flow from your intake sea cock. Remove the hose and open the seacock for a second. You should get a good stream at this point. If not, snake it out with a wire & try again. If you still have a problem use a high pressure water nozzle and backflush the seacock. If there's no problem, then do this a segment at a time up to, and through, the strainer. This sounds like a typical waterflow problem.

Blown Head Gasket?

Matt: Assuming that your oil level was normal and it now reading high, you may want to check to see if the coolant is getting lower. This could indicate a blown head gasket. Was there anything that happened on a previous outting that was any different. You may want to get the engine checked out for the head gasket. Once they go, other things can easily get damaged too.

Were you underway?

I do know that if you run the engine with the rpm's too high, you will overheat it after a while (and get white smoke)...

Thanks

Thanks for everyone's input. I am planning to check the coolant level and sea cock next week, when I visit the boat. Yes, the white smoke was from start up to shut down, and I wasn't running the RPMs high. Regards, Matt s/v Wu-Wei
