I have an 85 Hunter 34 and the thin white laminate attached to the interior plywood came off (delaminated) in several spots and looks pretty bad. The original laminate is very thin (I would guess less than 0.030") and the adhesive became unglued and then the laminate basically cracked off in various sizes. I am looking for suggestions about what white laminate could be used and what adhesives I should use to attach the laminate. The local Marina sells a fabric/vinyl style but I was hoping the Forum could help out with some ideas.

I Used PHEN-O-SEAL...

...to replace/paint the area I have in the shower. It was peeling from the plywood, so I scraped it, sanded it and then spread the sealer with a squeegee-type of spreader. I then sealed the water-intrusion areas with a silicone sealer. It has been fine for a few years and has never yellowed. Only the silicone sealer has discolored. It comes in a tube (like silicone) but is used as a sealer/grout for tile.

GuyT, you didn't say which areas are involved but

I do know that any laminate (Formica-type stuff) would work if you can find a color+texture match. The job will be a pain cause you have to remove all the old and apply the new to a properly prepped surface with a good contact cement. Epoxy 'might' work but I would talk with an epoxy manufacturer before I tried that.

has 4 x 8 sheets of plastic that I am going to use for a headliner. It is fairly thin, but more than .30. Contact cement works pretty good on it, or you can use liquid nail for shower/tub enclosures. Much less expensive than what you can get at a marine store. Available in different textures, but mostly the color is limited to white.

Don't think that it is formica!

I do not think that you are dealing with formica over plywood. I believe that this is a melamine product. This is what we had in our head area on our H'31. The product may not have been the best solution for an area that was damp and closed in. You may be able to peel off the stuff and then apply a formica type product over what you have.

Any of the high pressure laminates

that can be bonded with contact adhesives need a fairly smoth surface for bonding and will show all of the irregularities of the subsrate. Contact adhesives are just that, when the two coated surfaces touch they stick. Test fit all of your pieces before you apply any adhesive and plan your procedure very carefully.

Make patterns with large pieces of wrapping

paper first. There are special shears for cutting laminate. Cut the piece to the pattern but just a little oversize. Test fit and trim until you are satisfied with the fit. After that you need to plan very carefully as to how you will place it into position.

Original Was Melamine

Steve Dion is correct - the original finish is Melamine. It is available in various surface textures. For what it's worth, several years ago I came across a plywood laminating firm in Seattle (Ballard) that could custom laminate a Melamine sheet onto the plywood but it ran about $200/single sheet. I doubt they would sell just the Melamine sheet by its self because they are more into volume but, if you wanted to use the same material there may be a firm that could.

2nd the laminate

Our counter tops and some other surfaces were that same product. I took a heat gun and removed all of it. Then fitted WilsonArt laminate and you can just glue it on with contact cement. Looks much better and holds up much better. You can upgrade colors as well. They have some that even resemble granite if you are wanting a change. Rob Morton
