Whisker/Spinnaker pole fitting seems strange...

I'm trying to figure out how my whisker pole is supposed to attach tot he mast. One side has a standard jaw and opposing hoop, but the other side just has this metal hook. Though it seems secure under compression, if there were any strong forces pulling it outward, it would come off the ring easily. How is this supposed to be rigged? Photos:Yahoo! Groups

Greetings Astro,I have both a spinnaker and whisker pole (note they are NOT the same) and believe me when I say that what you have pictured I've never seen before and it looks like it will tear up your track on the mast while in use (but others may have this and say it works fine!). Is the pole you have rigid? What length? As I recall, the the J for our boat is 10 feet (and a bit) so your spinnaker pole should be that length at a minimum. Mine is 11 feet, which is manageable. A whisker pole is expandable and connects differently (it connects from the top down while the spinnaker is connected from the bottom up) than a spinnaker pole (which is,as noted, rigid). If I were in possession of what you have, I would take off that end and then look in Ebay or Amazon for a "real(?)" pole end. It should end with a pull leaver just as your other end has which allows for end over end tacking (and ease of handling). But this is just a suggestion. Hal

That does seem odd. It looks as though it's upside down, though that's just a guess as I've never seen anything like it before. I would have expected a fitting s more of a bdge joI've never th. I would have expected to see fittings for uphaul/downhaul in the centre of the pole to give you some control over setting.

Amazon and ebay are luxuries I don't really have where I am. It wouldn't be impossible to have something shipped it, but it would also be slow and expensive. I talked to the previous owner, and he said that they used it with the jaw-end on the mast, and the hook-end (pictured) run through the bowline on the genny sheet.

I agree with your previous owner that if you are going to use this as a whisker pole (not a spinnaker pole) then I would use that hook out on the sail, but I think I would try to soften the end of the hook with something over it just in case it rubs up against the sail. It will hike out that Genny nicely. Hal

I recently found cracks at the fitting attachment on my adjustable whisker pole. It was very easy to cut off and reinstall the fitting. You should be able to purchase a fitting of your preference from the company that made the pole.

Thanks for the replies. It's not impossible to get parts down here, it's just a challenge and sometimes very expensive. I did see some jaw fittings and the rigging shop the other day, but I'm pretty sure they're all too big. I'll check anyway.

Where are you located and what is the outside diameter of the pole where you want to replace the fitting?

I'm in Grenada for the next few weeks, then possibly Martinique for a few more days, and eventually Panama until mid-late February. The outside diameter of the pole is 38mm, but I don't know the inside diameter.

I envy where you are! I thought I might be able to help as I have a pole sliding latch fitting0 that will fit 1 1/8 inch ID tubing. 38mm is about 1.5 inch and assuming 1/ inch wall thickness you'd need something

It's the thought that counts, so thank you Walt!I think I'll make do with what I've got on the pole. If I feel like it really needs to be changed before I head over to the Marquesas, I'll find a solution in Panama. The trip to Panama is only 8 days or so, and It might end up being a reach, anyway.
