I have a drifter, and I am interested in the lightest weight whisker pole that I can get to pole it out. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks Dale

Where do you live/keep the boat?

I made a very servicable whisker pole from a large piece of bamboo. About 2 inch in diameter and about 12 feet long. turned ends from some western red cedar and the completed pole weighed aboat five pounds.

You want light?

Go with carbon fiber. Ten feet with fittings is about 3.5 lbs. We've been using a carbon fiber spinnaker pole on the 37" race boat and its a dream to handle. Still hurts when someone drops it on your head but not like the same in aluminum. The biggest hitch is the cost. Ten feet is about $850. Fortunately, our's came with the boat. Mark

Size Matters

What's the 'J' dimension of your boat? Our Hunter 28.5 has a 'J' OF 12'-1" and for non-racing situations we use an old adjustable 7'-14' twist lock pole with about 1.75" diameter at mid section. For racing it would be limited to the 'J' dimension. Just for comparision, the foot of the 155% Genoa is about 19'. The ring fitting on the mast is important for strength; ours is on a slider on a vertical track on the mast. I won't use it in gusty conditions as without a down haul, the pole could get out of hand and damage the mast fiting or break the pole end fitting. Weight of the pole isn't an issue on a 28' boat; on a 38-40 footer it migh be an issue for short handed crew.

Wisker Pole

Check with the West Marine advisor. It is extremely hard for us to recommend a pole without more information from you, on boat size and use. J measurement only applies to flying a symetrical spinaker when racing, not a poled out genoa.
