If I race in the non-spin class and use a whisker pole, will my PHRF rating be changed? Thanks, Bob

Non Spn PHRF

Bob, I race non spin on Pensacola Bay and the Yacht Clubs over here require a Gulf Yachting Association's PHRF ratings to participate. In the application form for a GYA PHRF there is no request for whisker pole info. GYA Rules allows a W/pole that is 160% of "J". In GYA there are 3 classes of racers. The spin, non spin and the Cruising class. Dont be surprised if your non spin reasults are not entered in the GYA data base as the only sailboat racing recognized by GYA is spin ?? GYA has no problem collecting your $40 yearly registration fee:: it is just that GYA is of a spinnaker race mindset. Your local club rules may modify the GYA set and have a ruling regards the W/pole. Our clubs do not. Most of the genoas here on PBay are 155% with max w/pole allowed. Believe you will find that the non spin racers are not that well regulated. No pre race inspections, on water or after race inspections. We are just not as serious as the spin guys. Bob Dean Hunter Legend 35

Whisker Pole Rating Hit.

The Chesapeake Bay YRA has active non-spin PHRF racing. Boats are handicapped identically for spin or non-spin. The standard rating allows for a Spinnaker (or Whisker) pole equal to 100% of J. You are penalized for a pole whose length exceeds J and it is not worth it for non-spin.
