Paul, the pole is a little short @ 10'4", but it was what I had available.
I suggest finding an old one piece mast (can even be a fiberglass mast) and cutting it down to length. But I used the top of a 550cm carbon mast that someone had thrown in the dumpster at my favorite windsurfing hole.
I used the new spray paint for plastic outdoor furniture, but any acrylic enamel should work.
For the car end I recommend: (but I did not have at the time, I cobbled up a spare from my 25 years of windsurfing)

The insert should just fit in the upper section of a 550cm mast top without using the actual base extension. I then used a stainless eye to connect the bottom of the base to the ring on the car, but with the example from my posted link you could bolt it directly to the ring and use the supplied mechanical joint. The problem with my setup is that the pole can jam if the eye gets on the opposite side of the ring when deploying. Not really a problem just something you need to be aware of when pulling the pole down.
For the clew end I epoxied a 6" piece of 1/2" PVC into the end of the mast and used the extra cut out material from my instrument pod as a backstop ring.
There are many way to skin this cat.
The nice thing about this setup is it is light easy to deploy and inexpensive (you can find lots of used windsurfing equipment cheep. These masts are very strong and flexible.
