Hi... I just bought a (first time) whisker pole to attach to our genoa, and I'm wondering how the best way is if I don't have a pole topping lift. How do I attach the sheet/clew end.... any suggestions? (Any other related suggestions about a whisker pole appreciated) many thanks Kai

One way.

On my H37C I simply snap it over the sheet and slide it out to the clew. This allows me to get the length right because it is the cheap model with the holes and detent button. On the mast I have a simple ring mounted at the correct height. I only use it with my yankee and the height does not change.

Whatever you do...

Don't store it vertically on the front of the mast. My jib sheet caught it and took it over the side, rather gracefully.

.....This sounds great......

but I am wondering doesn't the pole slide down the sheet? I am also planning to get a simple ring. What absout the placement of the jib sheet blocks... ? Thanks!

Whisker Pole

Tie your genoa sheets thru the sail clew with bowlines big enough to get four fingers into the loop. Snap the pole latch onto the loop first then fasten to the mast ring as your crew member lets out enough Genoa sheet to keep the pole off the shrouds. Typically moving the Genoa car forward will help hold the pole down;or for a better lead, use a snatch block out on the rail. The pole is most effective when used wing and wing. Generally try to aligh the direction of the pole parallel with the boom, but keep it off the shrouds or you will break the pole or the mast fitting.

The simple ring idea sounds great, but...

when I tried to drill a hole to rivet it on, I discovered there is a conduit or something coming down the front of the mast on the inside. I guess there are rings that can mount with holes on the end, but then I have never got quite the right radius for the mount. Does anyone know what that radius is? I am getting tired of buying the incorrect rings.
