What is the maximum allowable whisker pole length for racing? And what rule specifies this in the US Sailing Rules?I thought it used to be equal to the J dimension on a sail. Thanks for the help.
Hi MIke, Don't know about your area but here on the Gulf Coast the maximum whisker pole length is 160% of J. The rule is listed in the Gulf Yachting Association racing rules. Having raced non-spin and spin alot over the past 20+ years I can't imagine that a whisker pole less that 160% would be very functional on a 150/155% genoa. Good luck in your racing, Don
The PHRF bunch here allows you an adjustable pole as long as you mark clearly in red tape when it hits it's 100% J length. Any pole longer than your J length will get you a penalty on your rating.I'd read the local PHRF rules carefully, and/or call your local PHRF rep. The OKC YC says that you'll get a 3 second penalty for it being up to 10% over, and a 6 second penalty for up to 200% over.B
