As long as you want. If and only if you race PHRF, there will be a penalty if the pole is longer than the LP measurement of your largest sail.

As I no longer race, I like adjustable whisker poles.

I have heard as long as the foot of your jib. With a lapper, I like my pole a bit longer than that. Or, with an adjustable, however long it likes to be to work the best for you
