We leave ours in reverse on the advice of the salesperson. Apparently the prop turns when in neutral.

As Steve mentions, there is a lot of previous discussion you will find in the archives and the answer may be there. I spoke to the sales person at the marina as they use a H 27 of the same vintage as our boat as a training vessel. He recommended using reverse. HOWEVER, like others I spoke with he said, IT DEPENDS on your transmission. Some transmissions can freewheel with no problem, others, as with serious racing boats require particular attention. SO, it would be prudent, in my opinion, to seek our an "expert" on your particular transmission and follow their recommendation. Andy s/v Baroque

I called Yanmar and for my 376 he said. If the engine is not running the transmission is not being properly lubricated, use reverse. I do something that I believe may reduce drag. At a slow speed my wife puts the transmission in neutral I then position the 2 blade propellor so that the blades are vertical behind the strut she then goes to reverse. It may or may not reduce drag but it might.

One thing is for SURE...leaving your engine in neutral and letting it freewheel will add a lot of wear on your packing gland and your cutless bearing, regardless of whether or not it hurts the transmission. Naval architects also have a complicated explanation of how the spinning prop actually ADDS drage, relative to the stationary one.
