My old refer died and it is time to replace it. What is a good replacement, Adler/Barbour, Grunert, air cooled, air/water cooled??? I sail in the warm waters of SW Florida and the Bahamas primarily so water and air temps are usually above 80 degrees. I see the price differences but how about performance? How much more power consumption do I need to allow for with air cooled only? The box on my 1984 Hunter 34 is not insulated, any ideas on that? Insulating panels inside the box seem to be an invitation for germs and stinky stuff.

Are you sure!

Jerry: You say that your box is NOT insulated. Well I also though that about mine (1985 H'31). There is insulation around the unit, including the bottom. I cut an inspection hole to verify and it is in there. I think that a seal around the lid may help. When I place a towel over the lid, the holding plate does not frost up.

h34 Box Insulation

My 1983 h34 hull #56 has insulation on the sides but the Hunter craftsmen decided it was unnecessary on the bottom. DUH? I cut a big hole in the side to install the fridge and found 2 inches of insulation but none on the bottom where it is most critical. I found that out when I cut a hole to install an inspection port so I could fix the leaky icebox drain. Barry

air/water cooled SuperCold

To get the top performance from the SuperCold Machine the water cooling option can be added when installed, or at some time in the future. When the air passing through the SuperColds condenser reaches 90 degrees, the running time will be reduced, resulting in a lower average amp draw. When temps are below 90, do not use the water cooling, let the air condenser do the job. With the pump switch on, the water pump will cycle on and off with the compressor. As air temps increase, the water cooled advantage increases. In tropical climates power consumption can be decreased by as much as 40%.
