I've visited Doyle's web site and requested some info but thought I'd ask you here on the forum as well. I'm getting ready to purchase an asym for my Passage 42. There are two sails described on your site that confuse me. I think they're called the UPS and APC. I intend to use the boat to increase off the wind performance while cruising the Keys and thenn further south starting in a year or so. Can you discuss these two sails? thanks

I too, looked at the site. I'm familiar with symmetricals and measurements, but I'm not sure about how to measure for an asymmetrical. Could you please explain the measurements compared to "I" "J" and "P" of the boat and tell us what ranges or options are available? Thanks.

UPS vs APC

Bill, The APC, or Asymmetrical Power Cruiser, Is a true asymmetrical spinnaker designed for the cruising sailor. The LP of the APC is 165% of J with a midgirth of approximately 150% of J. Slightly smaller than a racing asymmetrical, the APC is most effective between 100-130 degrees apparent wind angle. This sail projects forward of the headstay and is usually used in conjunction with a dousing sock. The UPS, or Utility Power Sail, on the other hand, is a hybrid a-spin/genoa designed to improve light air upwind performance and to increase reaching efficiency. The LP(Luff Perpendicular) of the UPS is 160%. It is a smaller sail than the APC, with a straighter luff and is designed to be furled on a Harken roller furler(furler is included with sail). The most effective range of the UPS is 33-90 degrees apparent. Good Sailing, Bill Colombo
