Which Sail to Get

I see sails on Sunfish Direct. One is more than the standard 75 SF yet says it is class legal. Is that right? Does AMF still own Alcort and is the Sunfish still produced? If so I’d think I could buy one from AMF yet I do not see that. I was advised to avoid the sails available on Amazon yet they seem to have nice colors than what I see on Sunfish direct. I do plan to race in official Sunfish regattas so need the emblem I hear. I prefer a colored sail if that is legal yet the selection on Sunfish Direct was not to my liking.

Many class associations which govern racing in a class, do require a measurement label to be "class legal." This means the sail has been built to the class specifications. There is usually a small fee involved that is paid to the association. The reason for class legal sails is to make all boats as equal as possible.

You can find all the rules on the International Sunfish Class Association.

Class legal is only important if you want to race other sunfish in a sanctioned event. If all you want to do is go sailing it is utterly irrelevant and instead you should just be looking at price/performance of the sails on offer.
