Hey Bob from Niantic...
That's a very good move. Your options would be to:a. make expensive repairs on an already worn out motorb. go through the hassle of removing the dead inboard, sealing the shaft-log, and hanging an expensive outboard on the stern and lowering your boat's value. Additionally, you'll have to explain to any future owner why you did all thisThe benefit is that when you yank out the old, you can re-wire the boat with no engine in the way. You can also do a good scrubdown in the engine compartment. That's what I did while waiting for my new engine to arrive. The hull had passed the survey, but the engine had crapped out when the surveyor went to take it out on sea trials (lucky me!). The seller ordered a new engine and saildrive to re-power it for me in order to make the deal.I took the opportunity to rewire the entire boat, organize the engine compartment (electrical on the starboard, plumbing on the port side), scoured the engine compartment, bilge, and the entre area under the cockpit. After all was finished I essentially had a brand new boat.Oh...and NOTHING beats the feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction.Anyone on this forum who has ever been on my last boat, a 272LE, will tell you how picky I am about the way things are done. The link below is to my old website for my 272LE. I did all the mods and installs myself.Best of luck to you in whatever your decision! Let us all know how it works out.BTW...I bought my Nonsuch right down the street from you at Eastland Yachts at Brewer's Dauntless in Essex; what a beautiful area!Cheers,Bob
