I own an 88 First 405 with a 50hp Perkins 4-108. Right now it has a feathering 2 blade prop (unknown make/model). I need to haul the boat our and replace the prop. I am inclined to replace with the exact model, but an open to suggestions. Currently the boat has virtually no prop walk, and I would like to retain that characteristic. Thanks in advance for your suggestions! -Ryan

Your Inclination Is Likely Correct

I know Autostream used to make a two blade feathering as did Maxprop. They may still, but may not market due to more demand for the three blade models. However, if the one you have is the one you are satisfied with, by all means stay with it. i have a two blade geared folding Autostream, distributed through Martec in San Pedro. I am happy with it. Seahawk Autostream...

http://www.seahawk.com..au/ is the website. I purchased a Slipstream, 2-blade stainless folder and have never been happier. The quality of Seahawk props is second to none. Cheers, Bob

no prop' walk ?

An angled propeller will always have prop' walk. [oh boy, a fight :)] Only a propeller that has absolutely no shaft angle (horiz. & vert.) can be free of Prop' Walk - however, even these will exhibit "Prop' Wash" under most circumstance (any rudder angle at all). I like Prop-Walk & Prop-Wash - they help me maneuvre the boat. Why don't you want prop' walk? Thanks Gord

Gord, Please note that I said virtually no prop walk. Although I know some people use prop walk as a tool, I learned to handle my boat without it, and like the flexibility it gives me. -Ryan

Gord is correct...

Saildrive = no prop-walk as prop is not angled Shaft = prop-walk because of angle of the blades to the flow. I have a Nonsuch 30 with saildrive; no prop-walk My buddy has the identical boat with shaft drive; MAJOR prop-walk. Cheers, Bob

Thank you

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and input. Bob, the link you provided is a great resource. The comparative chart was very helpful, and did confirm the notion that feathering props do have the least prop walk. The question left for me is whether I fork over the extra $$ vs. a folding prop. Good sailing, RT

Ryan...

You can put a Seahawk Slipstream stainless folder on your boat for under a grand. Give Jim Blanchard at H&H a call for pricing on a feathering prop. You'll find their prices more than reasonable. BTW...Construction of the prop also has a considerable amount to do with prop-walk. Because Seahawk props are constructed of stainless they can shape the blades differently at the hub where with the weaker bronze, you can't. Cheers, Bob
