Just bought an ODay 27. Want to replace the older Mercury 15 2 stroke. Will the newer Honda 8 4 stroke be enough to power it or should I go to a bigger size. It's only going out of the club entrance against a 4 knot current and then it's smooth sailing into Lake Huron.

Should be a good motor

Hi Tessa - That 8 horse should be about perfect for your boat. You'll love going to a 4 stroke too! Any bigger motor will just add unecessary weight. Have fun! Trevor

Rod Johnson,

Electric start and remote controls

Given the long reach required to operate an outboard on the old O'Day 27, I recommend getting a motor that can have a remote electric start and remote throttle and shift controls as well.

Four Stroke Outboard- Be Careful!!

When you go from a two-stroke to a four-stroke outboard, you go "weight to weight" NOT "horsepower to horsepower". Don't forget, you have a sailboat not a powerboat. I expect you will sail much more than powering. I would stick with an electric state two-stroke.
