Hi, My old head on my C30 has finally started to fall apart. The plastic pieces are cracking after 20+ years...especially the base. So, which unit should I buy as replacement???? Does anyone have any recommendations. It will be used for weekend use...no live aboard. I need a small unit, manual only. Groco has their HF-B with bronze base in kit form that looks nice for around $160. There also is also a Jabsco unit out there for $120 or so. Thanks for any recommendations. Paul

head replacement

I have a Catalina 30, and replaced the head a few weeks ago. Bought the Jabsco for $99. Easy to replace-toughest part was installing new hose to holding tank. Old head was leaking, and parts were nonexistent (1979 boat). New head is wonderful.

Raritan PH II

About $200, the best value on the market...It's been rated the best manual toilet under $500 for decades. Pump is a lever, which is far more efficient than the cheaper "bicycle pump" models. Average lifespan of cheaper toilets made today is only about 5-7 years...the PH II will last 20 or longer if it's kept properly lubricated and rebuilt about every 5 years. If space is tight, it's now available in a compact version--the PHC. Same pump as the PH II, but on a compact base.

Jabsco head not a good deal for free!

Paul: I would not have a Jabsco head even if they gave me one for free. We had one a couple of years ago and it started having problems after a few months. Within a year or so it needed to be serviced and the screws on the pump assy. stripped out when lubing the pump. Do yourself a favor and get a PHII (if it will fit). Not too much difference in size to the Jabsco but much easier for everyone to use.

We just replaced our old Groco with

the Raritan PHII. Love it! It's not the kind of job you want to do more than once. Buy the one that will last.

Part Number 597443

West Marine offers a toilet with no moving parts that can not fail no matter what happens, it is guaranteed for life not to clog and installation is no more than a minute or two. It never needs to be rebuilt and is easy to clean. I strongly recommend this unit. It is on page 506 of the 2002 catalog. dave

If you're referring to a bucket...

It's no different from a portapotty as far as the laws are concerned. You cannot dump it overboard, which means you're now stuck with a bucket full of waste to carry ashore and dispose of. If it's not a bucket, how 'bout telling us what it is instead of imitating a coy 19th century schoolgirl...'cuz not all of us have a WM catalog to consult.

Part # 597443, close Peg, but no cigar!

It's just the seat that fits a three or five gallon bucket. But, you can always put a lid on it :^ ) alan (yea still lugging the port-a-pottie)

Where for $200

Just curious - Where can one find the PHII for about $200? This very site has it for $270+shipping making it much closer to $300. Just curious.

Wow, I feel good now--

... since resident expert Peggy Hall chose the Raritan PH which is the only one that I would've picked! JC

Will the PHII fit

where a Groco HF now reigns? How about the Raritan Cricket?

Check measurements on the Raritan site

If the PH II won't quite fit, the PHC should...it's the same pump, but on a smaller base.

Peggy-Why the PH instead of the Cricket?

You used to be very high on the Cricket. Why are you recommending the PH over the Cricket? BTW, will the upright handle on the Cricket fold down so one can lower the shower seat that folds down over the head w/o hitting the handle? Thanks, Wynn Ferrel

The Jabsco is fine for the $$

I replaced my old Mansfield (in my old boat) with a Jabsco for around $100.00 (it was on sale at the time), and it worked great. I have the same unit on my new boat, and have had no problems whatsoever (or I should say, so far)...

PH II v s Cricket

The Cricket is a fine toilet, but is better suited to smaller boats--the pump handle doesn't fold down, it telescopes, btw. It's what I consider a "light duty" toilet. The PH II for about the same money is real work horse...it's long been rated the best manual toilet under $500...With annual lubrication with teflon grease and a rebuilding about every 5 years or so, it'll last at least 20 years. Even neglected ones manage to keep working an amazingly long time. There is no one "best" toilet for every boat and its owners..I try to base my recommendations on several factors gleaned from reading posts--and a little intuition, too. For this boat and owner, I think the PH II or PHC (same pump on a smaller base) is the best choice.
