A friend of mine is in the market for a fixed mount GPS unit. He plans to do a lot of coastal sailing and sailing in the Bahamas. He is having trouble trying to decide on a fixed mount GPS unit. His boat is a 33' Gib Sea. Any suggestions? Thanks Greg

Which one

Has anyone had any first hand knowledge of either of these two GPS units, GPS Map292 or the 492 model? Thanks Again Greg

Chartplotter?

If he buys a chartplotter then he won't be sorry to have it in the Bahamas.

I have a hand held GPS map 272C that can attach to the boat. I have nothing but good things to say about it. I especially like being able to pull up a chart, go to the location I am sailing to and place a marker. Then sailing from where I am to that location while the chart shows a colored line for the heading AND shows exactally the heading I am on with a line that is marked off in marine miles. Novelman

From what I can piece together all of the major brands of GPS are OK, but not all of the electronic charts do a very good job in the Bahamas. I'd be tempted to call a charter company that works there and find out what chart system they think is most accurate. Then you could narrow down the hardware.
