Which furler?

I've been considering purchasing a jib furler for my 240 and have narrowed the choices down to two brands, the Schaefer Snapfurl and the Hood Sea Flex. The priorities for which furler are, 1} Ease of dismantling when trailering, 2} Ease of self installation and 3} Cost; in that order. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? Can anyone recommend one over the other or an entirely different one?

CDI

You will find if you check the archives that the CDI furler is the most popular,at least on this site. It is what I purchased last year and it IMO is the best deal for the price for our size boats and sails. Bill K H240 S/V Slapshot

Schaefer Snapfurl works well. . .

I recently installed a Schaefer Snapfurl on my 23.5. Installation took about an hour. There are special fittings that come with the furler that make travel rigging easier. I'm refering to keeping the forestay from slipping up into the furling drum. I highly recommend purchase of the optional fairlead that fits on the bottom of the furler. The design of the bow railing doesn't allow one to get a 90 degree fairlead position to run the furling/reefing sheet(line). The Schaefer is probably cheaper than the Hood. CDI is a great option as well . . .several friends have these.

CDI furler

Bill, did you install the CDI furler yourself? I'm assuming you're talking about the FF2 model. Did you get the ball bearing upgrade? Did you need to install any other hardware to facilitate line handling? Do you or anyone out there know CDI's web site? I'd like to read more about their units than what the retailers have in their write-ups. Thanks, Jesse

CDI Web Site

The Website for CDI I think is www.sailcdi.com and their phone number is 508-922-2322. I have a CDI on my H26 and installed it myself. I suggest you talk directly to CDI if you want to purchase and make sure you get the exact size you need and linkplates if needed to raise the drum about the deck. You will need to recut the jib, and have UV edge put on to protect sail from sun. Any good sail loft can do this. Also, CDI unit can be purchased from discount retailers like Defenderus.com or Sailrite. It will be much cheaper than directly from CDI, but they will help you anyway. Don't know about other brands, but CDI is inexpensive, easy to use,and very reliable. Good luck.

CDI for me....

I am in the process of installimg a CDI Furler on my 23.5. I went for the FF4 with Ball Bearing upgrade. It may be over kill for this boat but I got a really good deal @ sailnet.com on the CDI. I also sent my sails to SailCare.com and they recut them. I am installing all items myself, starting next weekend. I plan to document the installation with my digital camera.

Use Hood SeaFlex

I installed a Hood SeaFlex furler on my H23. I had to have tape (for the furler) sewn on the jib and genoa. I also had a blue canvas strip sewn on for the roll-up sun cover. It sure made handling the jib a lot easier

The sail is another story . . .

I bought a used sail that is esentially a 135% genoa with a #5 luff tape and u/v cover. It sails great . . .but I've had to install new cleats and blocks . . .outside the shrouds. The life-line gets in the way on the foot. We are still working on it . . .I will probably have my original hanked-on working jib re-cut in the future . ..

Jesse,Yes,Yes,No

Jesse,Yes, did it myself. Yes, I used FF2. No, Don't feel you need ball bearings. I sprayed "sailcote" on the disk and had no friction problems all year. The hardware you need such as fuler leads etc. you get from CDI. I ordered mine from Defender last year, cheapest at the time. I'm lucky I have a local sailmaker who did the jib for me. Take your time and you will do fine. You need at least one extra pair of hands to do it without problems. Good luck!! Bill K S/V Slapshot

Just finished CDI install

I just finished the details of my CDI FF2 install last night on a Hunter 22. It was very easy to put together. The toughest part is straightening the luff that comes coiled. I did it with only 2 people but 3 would have made it much easier. After that the setup was really simple and the sail furls easily without the bearings. I will try sailing with it this weekend. I found a used sail at a local swap shop so I don't know about the sail conversion yet. Dan
