Santa delivered my new IdaSailor Mahogany & Ash Tiller and riser today. The tiller has a marine penetrating sealer and is ready for varnish. I want to be ready to finish it after Christmas. What varnish do you recommend?

Got mine last Christmas!

Finished it with MANY thin coats of Helmsman varnish. Keep it covered with a Sunbrella cover. Looks like new after a full season of sailing. Have fun finishing it. It's a very rewarding process because the laminated wood looks SO beautiful. I'd swear the boat even steers better ;)

cover

Thanks for the words of encouragement csobalvarro! Did you get the post riser too? Where did you get the tiller cover? I'm keeping the rudder up/down haul cleat and tiller tamer so I may need a modified cover.

Tightening the steering

I'm told the stiffening plate sold by IdaSailor is a good way to address this. I'm planning on adding it this winter.

different problem

You "D" sailors have a different setup from the "S" model. Sounds like a good mod though to recover the original tiller/rudder feel.

Expensive, but sounds like it's worth it. I bookmarked the site for after Christmas. Thnx, Justin
