I have a new Yamaha T9.9 4 stroke, new fuel hose and new tank. Plan to run aviation gas to stay away from the ethanol issues.

Looking around I have two choices for a 10 micron filter fuel/water separator filter.
1. Yamaha brand cartridge filter. No drain, can not visually check for water.
2. Tohatsu filter with replaceable filters, clear bowel and drain.
3. Skip the filter since I will be using AV gas.

Any suggestions?

Or stick with ethanol gas and...

  • Run an extra filter anyway. Not all dirt is from ethanol. Bits fall in from the lip of the jerry can, spout, funnel, or lid all the time. The big filter will stay clean for years (4+).
  • Use a silica gel vent filter, if you have a built-in tank. Very effective at keeping fuel dry.
  • If you use a portable tank, CLOSE THE VENT whenever not in use. No breathing, no water.
  • Keep the tank full. Actually, good advise either way.
  • Use an effective additive, like Seafoam, Stabil or Merc Stor-n-start.
  • Try hard to use the engine every month (including winter). There is no substitute for using up the fuel, even av gas. IF not, make certain the carb is drained (use the drain screw, not just run it dry, which isn't really dry).
Av gas only works for those that don't cruise far enough to need a fill-up, unfortunately.

I have 2 of the same engine. A related post:

Important: clear plastic filter housings with drains are only rated for certain above deck applications with outboards. Mine are mounted in the engines well where fumes and leaks will drain away. Metal filters are required below decks.

Do not run av gas. It has additives in it that will leave deposits not normally found in marine use and if left to dry out will ruin carb parts. I know that from experence and it was relatively expensive. All our local marinas carry non ethinol high test gas as do many gas stations. It cost more but that only amounts to 10%.
