i want to buy a depth-/fish- finder for my catalina 22. i don't care to spend over $175 and i don't want to punch a hole through the hull; therefore, any ideas as to which is the best sounder for my buck? any/all responses welcome. thanx. ps: i don't expect to sail in waters deeper than 100 fathoms.

Uniden

I added the Uniden $99 or so model to my former 22. West, BoatUS sell the model. Transducer can be mounted inside hull up under the V-berth (but you might have to specify inside v. outside mount when order, I can't remember). Be sure to test it before installing it with the directions provided. Always worked like a charm for me.

Just put in a Garmin

I think it is a model 100 (I'll have to look at the box). It was $109 + $39 for a transom mount which I installed inside just fore of the keel. It works great. I was looking at the Hummingbird for $99 total, but the Hummingbird will not flush-mount. Jim Cook "Dream Chaser"

Humminbird

A friend of mine bought a Humminbird for his 31' Hunter and has the transducer stuck to the hull (from inside) just forward of the keel. Works great. Right now West Marine has one on special (w/temp sensor) for around $140.

A hole thought

Try to select one that has a standard mounting hole size. The instruments on our boat have 4" mounting holes. This limits my options conciderably when it's time to replace it.
