Which Caulk?-H26 Upper Compression Post

I'm re-sealing the compression post on my H26. On the upper end of the post, on the mast plate to cabin roof surface, I'm using butyl tape. Which caulk should I use for sealing between the cabin roof and the compression post Also, on the inside cabin, between the compression post and cabin ceiling? Thanks, BrianW

If it's under compression, butyl tape is THE answer.

Thanks Stu! I am using butyl tape under the plate that's under compression, I also want to seal the gap where the post goes through the hole in the cabin roof and into the cabin. That's where I'm trying to decide between 3M-5200 or 4200. BrianW

Not 5200 Brian. You know you will have to deal with this again in the future (I know you don’t want to hear that right now, but you will).

I concur with Stu except for that bloomin centerboard sheave pin so it will not move but it can be removed with a few cuss words to boot.

Thanks all. I used butyl tape on every thing except I used Satins's Glue on the top CB uphaul line sheave pin. I also coated the edges of the exit opening of the compression post to pad the sharp edges so they won't chafe the line. I have to confess, I also used 5200 on the lower plate and its gaps and openings.BrianW

Stu is correct about Satan's glue. The very first arch on a larger Hunter I got did not discuss which sealant to use and it was Satan's glue or 5200. When the boat was moved to an inland lake, taking down that arch was not funny. I had to make a few repairs at my expense while my customer had a good laugh with me grumbling while taking the arch off so very carefully. When I suggest 5200, I am very careful where to suggest applying it.

Sometimes when like Earl in Pickles funnies, I wish I could use 5200 to seal my wife's lips when being chewed out for something I goofed up on.

Follow up after using 3M 5200 to secure upper CB uphaul line sheave pin: &@!*EUR_£##!! mother &$@%# SATINS GLUE ran after I applied it and glued my &$@&%# sheave to my ?&$@ pin and hull! BrianW

Brian, the sheave needs to turn on the pin. Sorry you had to experience that when I did the same thing a couple of times but with no one around, I cussed like an old sailor, went into the office and snorted some moonshine.

CDC, I was very careful when applying the 5200 to leave a good clean gap on the pin near the sheave. The 5200 totally ran after applying and set on that "gap", partly encasing the pin and sheave. The worst part of the fix was cleaning out the mess behind the sheave. Lesson learned: wrap many layers of masking tape on the desired gap between the pin and sheave to act as a dam to prevent Satin's Glue from running after application. The sheave spins OK now, but only after an hour of cutting, gouging and cussin'. BrianW

Only if you knew what I did and an hour was a short time vs. the time spent. I felt your pain when you mentioned that.

I had a customer once who used 5200 to lock the companion slider hatch and boards as he got tired of folks breaking into his boat and stealing things. Turned out the kid two boats down was the perp and he got caught trying to break in that same boat while trying to cut that darn Satan/s glue. I fell over laughing at that one
