I'm getting our S2 7.3 ready for my first full season of sailng since we bought it last fall. Part of this spring comissioning will be removing the old, raggedy looking, bottom coat and applying a fresh new smooth bottom coat. But which one to use? Interlux of course...but in researching the dizzying array of bottom coats on their website I've come up with some questions, it should be noted that my home port is a fresh water lake. Extra and CSC seem to make the most sense, put on two or three coats and forget about for a couple years. After it sluffs off, lightly sand and apply two or three coats again, it can be hauled and relaunched without losing it's effectiveness. But which of those two? I can't seem to differentiate any advantages/disadvantages between them, short of price. She currently has Interlux ACT on her bottomsides, I know this because the previous owner gave me what was left over from the previous years recoating. This one makes absolutely no sense to me, unless you enjoy unnecessary work. You have to lightly sand and recoat every year because it loses it's effectiveness when hauled for extended periods. What am I missing here? Sure a hard coating like VC17 makes sense if you're racing, but ACT for a leisurely drink sipping daysailor? Anyone have any insight?
