Your HIN.

Your HIN does not compute for me. What model Hunter do you own? Here, for example, is the HIN of an H460: HUN46188H001 . This would have the number 188 on the mainsail. Manufactured in 2001. The 'H' is the code for the month which I forget, maybe August. But I do not see that in your HIN.

HIN Number

Several years ago the Hunter factory told me to decipher the HIN this way: HUN - Hunter Marine T0 - Model (30T) 046 - Hull Number J - Month Of Manufacture (A-January to L-December) 0 - Year Of Manufacture 91 - Model Year So, your Hunter 30T (1991), hull number 46 was manufactured in October 1990. And, if I am correct Ed has a H-46 (2001), hull number 188 manufactured in August 2000.

sail number

Class racing boats (as opposed to one design boats)tend to go with a 5-digit sail number so that there is less likelyhood of repetition at big regattas. You're on your own as to what numbers to pick. My 410 was hull number 47, so I selected 41047 as my sail number. Also opted not to go with a manufacturer's logo or model number. A little mystery is good sometimes, not that people who see a boat with an arch are going to confuse it for a Swan.

Sail Numbers

If your going to be sailing in a lot of regatta's then your best bet is to apply for a sail number assignment from US Sailing. If you are doing local club races then the other suggestions are good. I particularly liked John's idea for 41047.

Check Local PHRF

Call your local PHRF dude and ask them about your number. I went with USA in front of my numbers to set it apart from other's. Since I was in the system with this number when we changed boats I kept the number. It can be any number you want as long as PHRF does not have the number you want in ther system. I concur with Cliff's assesment...

The Lake Erie PHRF association will issue a three digit sail number for no charge (as part of the membership). Mine is 295 (for Hunter 29.5...easy to remember). I think the LE association dues are $30.00/yr. Not sure what other associations offer. I am a member of US Sailing. I order'd the PHRF Handbook for 2003 (for $15.00), found my PHRF association, got my boat rated (183 for Lake Erie), and got my sail number...easy, right?
