Could someone give me an idea as to which battery I should use on an O'Day 22 to power the lights and the electrical system. The wires are in the compartment of the stern cockpit on the starboard side. I have cleaned them and now I need to connect them to a power scource. Suggestions as to a power scource would greatly appreciated. Rob

deep cycle marine

Generally speaking, an Oday 22 doesn't have a lot of high drain power needs so any marine grade, deep cycle battery will do. You certainly don't need one of those expensive gel units. Marine batteries come in a few flavors: deep cycle batteries that provide power for things like lights, radios, stereos, gps, etc; starting batteries that are good for providing quick, high energy jolts of juice to start engines; and dual purpose batteries that are made to do the job of both a regular deep cycle and starter battery. No engine to start? Easy choice: pick a no maintenance deep cycle battery that fits in your existing battery box. Car batteries won't do; they are really starter batteries and will not last long if you try and draw power from them to run the vhf, lights, etc. You can get a marine battery at any chandlery. I have used the BoatUS/West Marine house brand on my Oday 23 and have had great luck. If you want to save some money, Sears used to have a Diehard RV/Marine model that I bet is cheaper. You will have to keep the battery charged or it will die. You can take it home and charge it a couple of times per season, or buy a solar trickle charger.

Costco / Sams Club or other big box deep cycle

should be fine. You should charge it regularly and after each use. I wouldn't just charge it a couple of times per season. Batteries that aren't kept charged don't last long.

Battery + charger solution

alot of Oday 22's have a 12 volt to power cabin lights, exterior lights, vhf, etc. What you should do is then buy a solar panel to charge the battery all day. They can clip on to the stern or bow pulpits or can be deck mounted.

Solar Panel

Colin: That is a great idea, where does one buy a solar panel and how do you attach it to a battery? Rob

Neat thing at Bass Pro.

Hi folks, was at a Bass Pro store the other day, saw a battery box I thought was pretty cool. Was wondering if anyone else has seen it and if so did you think it was worth it. It is a battery box that the lid, (or top) has a cable connection which hooks to the battery in order to connect your charger to on two post outside the box in order to not have to take the cover off. (Also has a strapping system that comes with it to ty it down to the boat. Then it has an LED (I think) voltage gauge that you simply turn everything off, hit the button on top and it tells by way of little light what condition the battery is in, Full, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 or discharged. It gets better; It also has a plug for a lighter type plug that you can hook accessesories up to. Or plug a small trickle charger into to help maintain the battery. All this for $39.00 What does anyone think about that? Thanks Jack Hart SEA-YA!
