Charter locations - my experience

There is no one best - there are many great and different charter locations. To visit only one area is to miss out on a lot. We have chartered the following: - The North Channel of Lake Huron - great scenery, tons of seperate anchorages - a great place to commune with nature and get away from civilization (at least a little bit away) - British Virgian Islands - great snorkelling and a restaurant in almost every cove (and often a steel band). When I worked in Austria, I helped others form the Vienna International Sailing Club (sounds a lot more prestigeous than it was - I think we had a membership fee of about 30 euros). We chartered in: - Greece - historic towns on historic islands, great meals - somewhat challenging for Mediterranean mooring - Croatia - a place like no other - many islands, ancient towns (several world heritage sites), unique scenery - absolutely a great place - mooring methods in marinas are easier than Greece. - Turkey has some great areas to charter - Friends of ours chartered there a couple of times when I was in Vienna - I couldn't get away from work :-( In addition to the above, while spending 4 months tenting around Australia after I retired in 2003, we joined in with a great 3 day charter in the Whitsunday Islands in Austalia - great beaches, good snorkelling and good hikes. Each area is unique in its own way - there is no best.

BVI--armpit by any other name

Just spend $5,000 on a one-week charter with the moorings in the BVI. It was the biggest waste of money in a lifetime of wasting money. I thought I would give a translation of cruising terms. 1. Professional maintenance-the book probably won't sink this week. Also includes holding wires together with masking tape and closing any gaps with 1 inch of caulk. 2. Dinghy davits-equipment on the boat but you are told not to use because it is broken (see professional maintenance). Of course the captain's notes state that the dinghy should never be towed. When pointing this out to the moorings staff their response to that is that those rules were relevant when the boat was owned by the previous company. But now that it is owned by the moorings it's OK to tow the dinghy. Therefore by merely changing ownership be handling characteristics of the boat itself has changed. 3. Island time-you have a problem, no one is working on it, no one is listening to your concerns, you're not going anywhere and it is costing you $75 an hour. Stated another way it means nothing is happening on your nickel. 4. Professional staff-a large number of people who move very slowly while doing nothing, during which time its cost is $75 an hour. A prime example of island time. 5. Friendly people-there has not been a reported case of aggravated rape or assault in the past two months. 6. Colorful people-dirty and unwashed. 7. Conch fritters-fried stale bread crumbs. 8. Caribbean cuisine-stale tortilla chips topped with a burnt processed cheese product. 9. Fresh seafood-mahifrom Ecuador the defrosted yesterday especially for you.

I get a feeling

I get the feeling that lml wasn't particularly happy with his charter in BVI.

Having Puget sound and our northern waters

in my back yard is great...but being born and raised here and never sailing anywhere else I am really ready for some warm clear water... We get about as many rainy days as you southern boys get sunny ones so my choice would be the BVI to start with... If Some body there wants to swap boats for mine up here for a couple weeks Im open...:)

LML I'm LOL. I don't know what you expected.

Sometimes you catch more flies with fresh fruit than you do with pickles.

results?

I have a feeling if you asked the same q of folks in AU or OZ, they would overwhelming say the S Pacific. Same with people in the Med. The results sound more like what is most familiar, not necessarily the "best".
