We are planning our first overnighter to Greenport, NY this Friday and Saturday. I thought I had it all worked out - the tides through the Gut, Friday off, supplies, etc - but can't find a place to stay. Several dockmates suggested staying on Shelter Island as a quieter and less pricey alternative. I called Shelter Island Yacht Club and they have availability and a launch but I do not belong to a yacht club so I can't stay there. My dinghy is a small plastic two person that I would prefer not to bring (3 rowing round-trips for a crew of 4)so I am looking for a mooring with launch service or a reasonably priced slip in either Greenport or on Shelter Island. I looked through the archives but didn't really find anything specific aboout launch service. Any one have suggestions? Thanks!

Check Brewer Yacht Yard

It is in a cove adjacent to downtown but because it is on the other side of an inlet is not within walking distance. They do offer complementary shuttle service and the facilities are first class. It is quieter and better protected than in the wharf in front of town. It's been a few years so I don't remember the details. Their phone number is 477-9594.

New town dock @ Greenport

The town of Greenport just opened (new this year) a dock-facility complete with about 60 slips and bathroom/shower facilities. I am not sure what they charge per foot if anything yet but the setup is really nice there. There are dozens of restaurants, coffee shops, ice-creams and bars in walking distance as well as shopping. If you have kids they will love it as there is also an adjacent park and merry-go-round. If you are looking to stay on the hook - across in Shelter Island is better, there is a yacht club at Derling Harbor and then a Coecles Harbor. See this link for more info - not as much going on at Shelter Island though - especially in Coecles Harbor. http://www.ospreysguide.com/CruiseGuide/CruiseGSI/cruisgSI.html The above link also has a Greenport section - some other harbors are around that may offer moorings. You can also check out my cruising blog for info on Greenport: http://cruisingguide.blogspot.com/ I definite recommend Greenport - the town has change dramatically over the past few years... Good luck and enjoy the weekend!

Shelter Island Yacht Club

I stayed there last year and I am not a member of a yacht club either - I think they charged $50 a night on a mooring ball. The rule as I remember it was that you couldn't stay more than two nights in a row or more than "some specified number of nights per month". Very nice place, great showers and club house.

Derring Harbor

I was just there last month. We stayed at the Shelter Island Yacht Club and I'm not a member either. I think it was $60 for a mooring, this included launch service. They have a very nice facility, clean showers. The ferry over to Greenport is a short walk. You can also anchor in Coecles Harbor but it's a long way from Greenport. It's a nice stop over though if you want to break things up. Good anchoring and protection, nice swiming, etc.

Thanks for the help

I got a slip at Mitchell Park Marina. Not inexpensive ($3/ft) but convenient. In case you need the number it is 631-477-2200. The Osprey site and many others have it wrong. I'm still not clear on why the Shelter Island Yacht Club refused me. I usually have to at least go somewhere before they through me out ...
