Where to Sail and Keep Boat in South Carolina

OK Guys (and Gals if you're with me on this, too),

I wonder, where to sail and keep a boat in the water in South Carolina?

I know about Charleston Race Week and the ability to have reasonable close access to the open ocean from that good city. But, as I found out last weekend, if I get a slip in Charleston, the reasonable access is directly proportional to the reasonableness of the price. In Charleston, I can spend more in a year for a slip than the cost of GOOD TRADE.

So, what I really want to know, where are the least expensive places to get a slip?

I found one "Marina," that was actually less expensive than my current place, including water, electric, and pumpout for a flat rate of "about" $100 a month. But that is landlocked on Lake Murray.

That said, are there other, NOT-CHARLESTON and NOT-CHARLESTON-PRICED marinas in South Carolina?

I sail on landlocked Wateree Lake and love it. My boat came from Georgetown, SC. I don't know much about the sailing there or what services the marinas offer but you could look into it. Roger Long seemed to really enjoy Georgetown during his Atlantic coast cruise.

We spent about 10 days in Charleston SC this last April about 5 days at the City dock, the rest anchored out. You're right too expensive for the Mega dock. There were a few other boats including several liveaboards in the anchorage. The price was right !

I grew up sailing the open sailboat that we used to trailer down to Charlestown every summer. We sailed around the Isle of Palms, Mount Pleasant, Sullivans Island, etc. There are numerous small marinas located next to the ICW which runs between Sullivans Island & Isle of Palms. That whole area is interconnected by the marshes. Not sure how well protected it is from Hurricanes, but I'm sure its cheaper than anything in Charlestown. Across from Charlestown is Georgetown which also has some marinas. Google marinas in Charletown & these areas & I'm sure you'll get a bunch of potential marinas. A good bit further North is Buford S.C. which is a little sailors haven. Sailing in Charlestown always brings back good memories. Cheers.

If you want to keep a boat for little or no money in the Chuktown (Charleston) area you will need to get out and find yourself a slip or dock.
There are literally hundreds of canals and creeks in the area. In those there are many many unused docks behind houses, some that even have deep water access. But there aren't going to be any sources (brokers/adds) for these docks; you will have to fill up your gas tank and go searching. Make a day (maybe quite a few days) of it, bring a lunch and something to drink. But if you want to play in the playground of the rich and famous for a reasonable price, you will have to do some hard work. The same thing can be done almost ANYWHERE in Fla or the Gulf coast, if you are willing to search and take the time.
