I am cleaning up the plumbing on my 77 H25. Since I will convert to a porta-pottie I will not need a holding tank only freshwater tank - fine since this is really a day cruiser. The boat only has a holding tank - a hard plastic 15-20 gal. - located under the V-berth. The owner ripped out the freshwater tank for some reason. My options seem to be pull the holding tank - DETOX with bleach - and use it for the freshwater tank (washing dishes etc - no drinking). Do you see any problem with cleaning and reinstalling back into the fore section of the boat? Others seem to have their fw tank under the cockpit. Thanks! Mike

I gotta say this.....you win the award

For being the MOST frugal sailor I have every run across....please buy a new tank for your water supply...

Noooo...

I wouldn't even consider using a tank to hold fresh water that's ever held sewage. Think about it: you wash your hands, then pick up a sandwich off a plate that was washed in the same water. So if the water from that tank isn't safe to drink, it's not safe enough to use for anything. So unless you wouldn't have a problem washing your hands and dishes in the water in your toilet bowl at home--even immediately after cleaning the toilet--bite the bullet and replace the tank.

all right...you win!

Good points - thanks! Will get a new tank. But I am still curious of the best spot for it - fore or aft. Thanks!

Wherever it's easiest to install and plumb

to a water pump (1.5 gpm ShurFlo is more than adequate...even somewhat smaller than that if they make a smaller one)--which should be relatively close to the tank and at or near the same level as the discharge fitting on the tank--and then to the sink. Keeping in mind that the tank also has be to be vented AND filled. So the location of your current deck fill--if there is one...if not, you'll be a lot happier if you install one, 'cuz it's a PITA to have to open up the tank location and bring the hose in every time you need water--and routing for the vent line and fill hose has to be considered too.
