Replacing motor-mount, and motor (tohatsu 9.8 longshaft)on 83 Catalina 25. I want to reinforce transom both inside and out.On the outside under the motor-mount I've heard of a marine type wood by the name of Star-Board, catchy huh. Can anyone out there give me some additional information please. And by the way what the heck is oil-canning. Many thanks, Mike

Reinforcement

Hi Mike - When a hull flexes under pressure it is often termed as "oil canning" - usually from less than adequate construction for the application. Starboard is a plastic product typically used for cosmetic cover up of large holes (removed instruments or winches, etc) - I get it in Seattle from an outfit called Clear Cut Plastics - see Related link below. I don't know how strong it is for strucural repairs; it seems to me that glassing in a stringer made of marine plywood would be more appropriate for your application based on your description, but I'm no boat builder. Hopefully you can get some expert advice on reinforcing your transom. Best, Trevor
