I would like to purchase a helm guard for my Hunter 33 (77-83). Can anyone refer me to a good website for purchasing this? All I have looked at so far (West Marine, etc.) are in the neighborhood of $300-350... that seems pretty expensive and I've heard there are cheaper places out there. I would like to purchase an offset one to mount my electronics on. Any recommendations and/or pictures of your installs would be appreciated. thanks!

I would try Edson. Garhauer make excellent stuff at a reasonable price. You might check them out too. Shouldn't be too hard for a stainless shop to make one up.

in Michigan. Custom made to fit my Edson it was $100. But that was five or six years ago. I think it is 1 1/4" stainless, 54" tall and with offset. Give them a call(Related Link).

Hi Barry, most helm guards for production boats ...

are made of 3/4" -1" vertical SS tubing that is mounted in front of and attached to the steering pedestal. It has a variety of uses; mounting instruments, accessory boxes, cockpit table, other electronics, etc. It also is a handy grab point when needed. See the link, which shows the top part of our pedestal guard. http://www.sailboatowners.com/upload/pix.tpl?folder=73319664469&sku=118100543416777661&fno=17 This next link shows the bottom part of the guard and how it is attached to the pedestal. http://www.sailboatowners.com/upload/display.tpl?folder=73319663346&fno=17 Terry

Hardware to mount bar to pedestal?

Terry, Thanks for posting the pictures, that is very helpful. The setup you have is exactly what I want to do. I noticed the piece of hardware you have that connects the guard bar to the pedestal (plastic piece?). Where would I find one of those pieces to help mount my bar? thanks, --mike

Hi Mike, if your boat has an Edson pedestal...

they would be your best source for that metal bracket. I've seen it in their catalog, so it should still be available. They have different sizes for the various models they make. Terry P.S. Just another thought. You can get different guard assemblies from Edson. Straight, off-set (like on our boat), etc. Some might dislike their pricing, but like other marine products, Edson designs and manufactures their stuff to withstand the marine environment.
