Where to purchase a 60' to 70' long 30A shore power cord?

It turns out that my new marina, the Edmonds Marina, near Seattle, requires that my shore power connection between my boat is one, uninterrupted, power cord from boat receptacle to shore power receptacle. So I am looking for a continuos 30A shore power cord that is between 60' to 75' long. Does anyone know where to find one of these? I am sure that I can make one up, but I suspect that it might be costly.

30 Amp Description yes, BUT

the connectors look like 50 amp not 30. Check it out carefully.

Long distance!!!! Is the electric supply on shore in the parking lot?

Seriously, would there be any concern about the long distance that the cord is carrying the electric current? Some of the electricity gurus on this site might be willing to discuss that issue.

Is there any possibility of putting the boat into the slip in a way to get the outlets closer to each other? That would be a cheaper alternative.

Too bad you not here in Punta gorda we have a marine store that sells
all kinds used boating items and have seen many electric cords cheaper than new.
That does sound kind of long.

If your able skillwise, you spend half as much making it yourself with components from Genuinedealz.com or even home depot. If your going to be sucking a full 30amps through it be sure and plus size the cable gauge for that length. youll save enough money to make some 30-50 30-20 adapters while your at it. and don't faint when you see the price of 75' of copper cable cause it ain't cheap..

Confronted by a similar problem, I had a set of shore power receptacles installed in my anchor locker (closer to shore power). Shorter cords work now. Large gauge solid wire is much less expensive than dock cord.

This is NOT that long. From our power post centered in our two-boat well, down the finger and across the transom of our 35 footer takes all of 50 feet.

You should not use solid wire anywhere on a boat. Even using non-tinned copper wire is inadvisable.
If you can find a premade 75 foot shore power cable (make certain it has indeed 30 amp connections), you will be much better off, as the molded rubber connections are totally waterproof, but it is quite difficult to get the plug/wire connection water tight with after market or home depot ends. Be extremely cautious buying used shore power cords, as they could be beyond their safe working life and yet look very good.

Yeah, I don't know what the AC wire was made from, just noted that it was stamped ABYC approved and cost a fraction of what a longer shore cord would have cost. When it comes to electrons, I have a man.

Thanks for the input. I will keep looking for a longer one-piece cord. Currently, I am just routing my existing 50' cord over the top of my boat along my lifelines. It provides a continuous single cord connection to shore power as the marina requires, but I am trying to minimize the inconvenience of coiling it up and taking it off of the boat when we go sailing. My old shore power cord is pretty old, so a new one is fine to buy. If I can't find a one piece longer cord, then I will probably just keep doing what I am doing.

Thanks for the input all. Some good ideas.

I think the Charles cord posted is the only one longer than 50'. Marinco and Hubbell only make 50' cords.

I would think a longer cord would have to use 8 gauge instead of the 10 gauge for a 50' cord. That will add to the expense. 30 amp end connectors are designed for 10 gauge.

30 amp cords as well as boat side inlets are rated for 24 amps continuous, 30 amps intermittent.

Re: Where to purchase a 60' to 70' long 30A shore power cord

the voltage drop on #10 guage wire for 75 ft run is only 4.621 volts = to 3.85% drop so you would still have 115.379 volts...depending on how much the shore power source is at the connection and the differance from 10 gauge to #8 gauge is only 2. volts resulting in the end voltage being 117.xx volts ...so its not really worth the extra expense on the ac voltage...

It would get a bit warmer though, especially if used at near max rating continually as many are.

50 amp cords (50') are 6 gauge (and very expensive).

not sure i understand the problem here if you only have a 3.75% drop in 75 ft cord # 10 and only a 2% drop in #8 why is it a concern both were figured at 75 ft run and chances are your marina is not up to 100% on the amount of power they are supplying sounds lik to me they are not diong a good job of furnishing power with in 50 ft of your boat whitch is the normal standard if it wasnt then the cord mfgs would be making longer cords for the hook up.....

As a follow up to some advice that I received here. I found that all three companies that I sent inquiries to: Smart Plug, Marinco, and Charles make 75 foot long 30A shore power cords. I am going to wait until the Seattle Boat Show and buy a Smart Plug cord and inlet socket at a discount.

Anyway, FYI and see email repsonses for all three companies below:

We do have a 75 foot part number 75SPP.OEM THAT IS A 30 AMP 125 VOLT 75 FOOT

West marine will sometimes sell just the shore power cable in feet 30 amp 125 is normally 10 awg 3 conductor cable. We only sell it by the roll of 250 foot that’s why I’m recommending West marine for that

We have started to discontinue the yellow cable from our product line and no longer have the 30-amp cable in yellow and will not be reordering.

We have a 75-foot cable in white, our part number 30PCM75LW. This can be ordered from your local dealer or distributor carrying the Charles Industries Marine product line.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Wow! That was good customer service responses by all.

(Does this mean most ALL marine power cords are 'going' white)?

This is GOOD NEWS! Sorry, but no one today should be buying anything BUT a Smart Plug. Terry G. at Smart Plug is a great guy as is Ken...

I have been working on a Smart Plug article though sadly it is not yet finished, far from it. The basic outline is there though I am lacking some images.

Feel free to take a look at it while it is being framed up, some of it is rather startling!

The password, while under construction, is: smart

What is your take on a made up cord?

That is -- does ABYC forbid making up a #10 (10/2 with ground) cable?

In other words can one purchase the cable and the two ends separately -- then install smart plug at the boat-side end and the Hubble standard at the shore-side end?
