Where to Next?

Ok folks my wife and I are trying to decide where to go on our next summer's vacation, with our Hunter 260, been to Lake Powell (unbelievably beautiful) and last summer spent 2 weeks touring San Francisco Bay also a wonderful experience. We are having trouble finding a destination that would top those two places,any suggestions. Western States or Canada.

San Juans and Gulf Islands of Washington and Canada.... beautiful...easy access and safely do-able in even the smallest or largest of boats.
july thru august are the warmest months, but the marine air can still be down right chilly on some days when on the water.
this time of year also has the highest amount of boat traffic in the area....

Drag your boat across BC to the Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast (Cdn) and/or the San Juan Islands and the Puget Sound (US) or any combination of those. Great sailing, protected anchorages, super marinas and the most beautiful scenery anywhere. You will not regret.

You may want to consider the Broughton Archipelago if you're looking for the last frontier. It's on the mainland roughly the same parallel as the northern tip of Vancouver island.

Although one of the most beautiful places on the coast (on both days it dosn't rain) it's also the most challenging you'll find anywhere. Radio contact is spotty at best with the narrow passages and high mountains plus the waters are freezing should anything go wrong. Passage through the many narrows requires planning to avoid the currents. Self sufficiency is pretty much mandatory as there are very few other boats around.

On the other hand, the rewards are spectacular both in scenery and the oddball, out of the way settlements you happen upon.

Why not go to somewhere really different.

The Chesapeake Bay Region is beautiful. It has great cruising grounds, great anchorages, and unique places to visit. One last thing....some places may not be around that much longer so you may want to visit them soon:

Tangier Island and Smith Island are very unique and worth the visit. They have their own accent and culture.

Other cool places in the Middle Bay are Solomons Island, Onancock, Deltaville, and Saint Mary's. A little further up the Bay you have Annapolis and St. Michaels.

You can spend a lot of time in the Choptank River as there is a back way to St. Michaels. There is also access to Oxford and Cambridge. You can go through the drawbridge at Tilghman Island.

There a lot of sailors in the area (Annapolis claims to be the sailboat capital of the East Coast). Most places have access to land that is free or cheap. There are tons of marinas, Bed and Breakfasts, and quaint anchorages.

A drive for sure. But a worthwhile trip!
