Where to mount spreader light?

H31 Got my mast on saw horses and think I've got everything planned except location of the swivel spreader light. I decided not to go with the deck/steaming light due to the mast shadowing the cockpit. Question.....on my B&R rig, would you mount the light on the lower or upper spreader? Don't know the light cone area of the light. Perhaps I could test it off the boat and determine that way. Any B&R rig owners have spreader lights on their boats? Thanks....Gary

Lots of light

we have double spreader lights installed on the upper spreader. Looks like a football field at night!

Spreader light location

Gary, we have a 1991 H30T and our spreader lights are mounted on the first (lowest) spreader. Even with our dodger and they light up the cockpit very well. Rich

What about wiring?

You say the wiring is tricky. Was afraid of that. Any tips appreciated. Also, I was thinking only one light was sufficient...don't care to get a suntan...agree? Thanks for the quick response.

Mast Light Wiring

Several parts of that job were a pain in the butt. On my h34 the factory had a nice switch in the control panel for spreader lights and no wiring in the boat. Running the wiring to the mast base is a pain thanks to the hull and pan design. I put a small hole in the stringer on the port side and snaked a wire that exited near the compression post base. I did this at the same time I replaced the compression post with stainless steel. You need to get the wiring from the stringer to the deck. The wiring inside my Kenyon mast was straight forward. I like the wiring channel design. You'll need to slide the sail track down and drill a hole where you want the wire to exit the channel and go inside the mast near one of the spreaders. You can add another connector for the spreader light buts I suggest you add extra wire length and make all the connections inside the boat with a buss bar arrangement. The plugs under the mast are a common source of mast wiring problems. Hope you check the compression post, cross beam and seal the wiring pass tube wjile the mast is down. Have fun!

Daryl...

The more I think about this, the more I wonder if I should forget it. You mention sliding out the the "sail track" and drilling a hole. Do you mean one of two aluminum conduits inside the mast which contain the wires? If so, I slide one of them all the way out, drill a hole in alignment with a spreader, push it back in, and then somehow fish a wire from the mast base to the spreader. Maybe this will make more sense once I look over the mast and get started. Really appreciate your help...Gary

Question?? *o

Why do you need all this light overhaed? I have a foredeck light and rarely use it because it obstructs my night vision. Even a cabin light below that's on will do the same.
