Looking for ideas on where others have mounted GPS antennas, given that I have a stainlees steel arch, mounting under it along the cockpit seems out. Thanks for the info.

Aft Rail

I have 2 gps and 1 differential antenna mounted on the aft rail. They work fine there.

cockpit coaming

I too have a stainless arch and my Raymarine antenna is inset in the cockpit coaming at the aft end of the cockpit. Reception is fine.

Pedastal guard

I put a new plotter on this summer and tried the easy way...on the pedastal guard. Works fine even with the bimini and dodger up. Beats running the wiring up thru the boat and guard tube. This worked for me, C36 MKII.

Lots of options

Hi Lauren - As you can see, there are several options available to you that should work just fine. Today's GPS receivers are so sensitive that the aren't limited to a completely unobstructed view of the sky in order to get good reception. I mounted my antenna above the companionway near my instrument displays. Even though the antenna is located under the dodger it has always worked fine. Experiment with what works aethetically and for reception - another factor is how easy it is to run wires. Best, Trevor

I was just about to ask this question!

Will be getting a new gps plotter this year and was wondering the same thing. Where to place the antenna? Does anyone have pictures of their placement - it should would help in my decision. Jim S/V Java

GPS antenna mount

Jim, If you look closely you'll see the antenna on the cockpit coaming, look between the power cord and the wheel. It's inset on the coaming.

Aft rail mounting

I used a stubby antenna mount that clamps over the stern rail next to a vertical support member to mount my Standard Horizon's antenna. It just threads onto the same threads that a VHF antenna base has. Works great. S/V Intrepid H34 #113

Inside the the port cockpit coaming

The Raymarine GPS 120 on my 1981 H-33 is in the port cockpit coaming forward of the winch. I stuck it there "temporarily" while installing the C-80 and I got a great signal, so....it's still there looking through fiberglass and people!! We've sailed with 5 people in the cockpit and never lost signal lock (a fact I find hard to believe). It's out of sight and out of harms way.

Joseph and some others - question

Joseph brings up an interesting question on where to mount the antenna. If he has his under the combing and is still receiving good signals we should be able to mount out of sight anywhere - maybe. So I was thinking how about a flush mount on the back of the Navpod itself. Some others on the site are mounting from Hunter back on the stern as a flush mount. This would very out of the way. Has to point up

Jim, Don't think a flush mount on the back will work - the antenna has to point upwards.
