Where to look for a piece of mast?

Hi,

I'm refitting a 1976 Catalina 27 and I need to find 1 foot of mast to make a repair. The previous owner had broken the mast and it's a bit short now. I want to add in a piece at the bottom to get it back up to the original height. Anyone know of good places to look?

Contact Catalina .... with your serial/HIN. They should be able to cross reference the HIN to what was the original mast (section number) and manufacturer.

Then contact that mast manufacturer who should be able to supply your with a sleeve, etc. based on the mast section number (that Catalina originally provided). ;-)

By dimensions there are only a few possible mast sections that would actually replace that on your boat. See DAMCo and Rig-Rite and match it up. I rather doubt, given the age of your boat, that it could be Selden's.

I am however concerned about how you intend to add 12 inches of mast extrusion to the bottom of the spar. Without your splicing it I will worry about how it will work. Have you an idea I don't?

Well, that's kind of part 2 of the battle.

The mast has already been repaired in the middle (where it broke in half) by inserting an internal sleeve, riveting the sleeve to the mast, then welding the two mast sections together. I had hoped to do the same for the bottom section. I also race on a Cal 9.2r that had 3 feet added to the bottom of the mast in a similar way. It's been working so far...
