Where to install a bimini....

All, I'm about to order a bimini top for my '87 C-22. But I'm a little unsure of just where to install the thing. I know, I know - over the cockpit. Seriously, the tubes come to a point and attach to a bracket on the deck. I'm not sure where to put that. On the cockpit coamings? I'm thinking we'd hit the bimini tubes when we lean back against the cockpit backrest. On the side deck outboard of the cockpit? Maybe that's the best spot. Or maybe on the vertical, outside surface of the cockpit coamings..... No matter where I install it I'll probably invest in a section of that track stuff so I could move it fore and aft a bit. Anyone have any advice for me? Thx, Chris I. Clearwater, FL

what brand Bimini?

Chris, I am wanting to install a bimini on my 81 Cat22 and have the same questions. I will order mine but am not sure of the width. I know the height should be 42" and the length is about 5 to 6 feet. But, like you, where do you mount the frame? What brand did you get and where did you order from? Robert

Installation

The best way to position your bimini is to get a couple of friends to help hold it in position, while you mark where to put the brackets. Be sure to leave at least 4" between the mainsheet and the aft end of the bimini. Not all biminis are the same. I have mine mounted on slides which fit on the genoa track, but when it is in position, the bimini sits approximately 12" forward of the aft end on the genoa track, approximately 2 1/4" inside the center of the track.

PS

I made my track slides...not easy to roll the stainless to fit the genoa track. These do make it easy to remove the bimini, but not necessary. I pretty much put my bimini in the same place every time.

Haven't ordered it yet, but...

Robert, I'll probably order the bimini from overtons.com. They have a bunch of options. I'll probably go for the one with sharkskin fabric. It's a 5-year warranty (like Sunbrella) but costs a bit less. I think it's about $200 and includes a cover for the bimini when it's folded up. I'm not sure about the height or width. Depends on where I mount it. I'm thinking of building a little frame out of wood so I can visualize exactly where and how to mount the thing. Chris

outside genoa tracks

I have mine mounted on the outside genoa tracks, I used an old set of cars and made brackets for the bimini top. My bimini top is 85" wide. Several of the members of our fleet have used the same set up with good results.
