I am looking to aquire some cushion foam for my lifelines in the cockpit. The 2" circular foam which we boaters used to use years ago, is not available, because the company went out of business (or was bought). I wan just the foam so I can make my own cushions. Does anyone know where the foam for lifelines is available?

Lifeline cushion foam

I think you could use pipe insulation foam. You know, it's black and split so it goes around the pipes? I thought of that after I purchased already canvassed ones last summer, so I haven't actually tried it. s/v Island Time

Thanks..but not suitable.

that foam is not strong enough, and compresses after a time. I'm looking for closed cell foam 2" in diameter, with hollow center.

They sell the cushion on this site.

Dave: You know that they sell the cushions here on the HOW site. I guess you want to make your own, but you may want to take a look anyway. Maybe the people that make them would sell you the foam. If you decide to DYI, contact them and see if they can get the foam for you.

I tried it,here's how

Yes I used pipe insulation,it was $1 for 6'of the type that has no split but I picked a smaller size (that end up 11/2" round after tapeing),that I put over 1/2"PVC thinwall $1.29 for 8',then wraped all of it with blue elec. tape $2.99-one roll did 6'nicely,there are other colors, been in sun on boat now for 3 months in fla.-still looks new!for this $$ I can just make more when they do go bad!if you got time, not lots $$$$happy sailing

Noodles

You might want to think about using those "noodles" kids use in the pool. Cheap, easy to split with a utility knife, cut to practically any length. Waterproof and, pricewise, disposable. Come in all sorts of colors that won't run or fade. Works for us.

Bob Howie wins...

Hello, We now need to think up some kind of net based award or trophy thing for Bob Howie here... Bloody brilliant idea, who'd have thought... I am going to do just this on my 22 when I re-string the lines in the spring, thanks... This is like the Ford or Goodyear idea for cheap lifeline foam... Kudos... SH.

If you shop around you can get them with a hole through the middle and you do not have to split them. I had to take them off of my boat as my wife did not like the orange ones. If I can find blue ones this year I'll see if she lets me get by with those. Another boat in our marina has green ones that look absolutly hideous. Maybe I'll just sew up some covers for them.

Thanks to you all...but...

The best lifeline cushions are the foam type (picture on page 980, right column, second picture down, of West Marine 2002 catalog), covered with sunbrella (blue). I make my own covers, winch, sail, lifelines, etc.... but unfortunatly Medof Marine is out of business. I'm just trying to fine the mfg who extruded it for Medof. Thanks for all of your help and replys.

Lifeline Cushion Foam

Plumbing Pipe Insulation works well. Available at low cost from Home Depot or anywhere plumbing pipe is sold.

Micheles' idea is a good one. I am an Upholstere and that Plumbers Insulation is a good Closed Cell Foam.I use it on my Lifelines. If you want Appearence, a Trimmer can cover it for you in some Dacron/Nylon. Closed Cell Foam is pretty darn expensive by the Yrd, then again it matters on the Density of the Foam.
