Where to finde an emergency tiller for a vintage (1981) Hunter 33

Outfitting a Vintage Hunter 33 (1981) and looking for sources of replacement parts. Can anyone direct me to a source for an emergency tiller (new, fabricated, replacement, used) ?

New to Hunters and a boat of this size !

is one spot you could look, not sure if you will find it there. There are lots of folks here at this site that know their Hunters very well. Knowing what my emergency tiller is like, I would say you could get one fabricated fairly easy. All mine is is a piece of tublar stainless that fits in the top of the rudder post with a slot cut in the bottom of it to fit down and over a pin that runs through the top of the rudder post. It would be similar to a pipe key used to shut off the valve in a water meter out at the street to turn off the water supply coming to the house. And then there is a handle that goes through a set of holes drilled opposite each other in the top of the tube so one can turn it to port of starboard.

Also, check for a hunter boat owners association to see if some of those folks can help you.

THE website for Hunter Owners. I am sure he got to the "Ask All Sailors" forum from the Hunter Owners site. And "Ask All Sailors" is OK because most of us start from "New Posts" which is the same for all brands. Or at least that is how it works for me.

But just in case not everyone works that way you could also post it on the Cherubini forum under Hunter sites. There are several H33 owners who post and reply there regularly. It will still show up on "New Posts".

Meanwhile my own Cherubini(H37C) emergency tiller is exactly as Tom described his. There were some pictures posted recently of the rudder workings of the H33 or maybe the H30. But I don't remember seeing the tiller. Someone will have pictures though.

Fairly easy to make one

Made one up using a length of pipe from Home Depot. Believe it was 1.5” stock. Form in an “L” shape with a pipe elbow. The guys at the store will put in the pipe threads you need. Put a cap on the end. As everyone has said the end that fits over the rudder post requires a bolt through the middle to fit into the grove in the rudder post. The emergency tiller fits on backwards with the tiller facing to the stern, see attached picture. It is very important to have an emergency tiller. Don’t find out the hard way like I did.

You are in luck... Hunter still make boats. Make a call to Hunter.

Or use your noodle and make one for 1/10 the cost.

Not knowing what your set-up is... find some aluminum that will fit over your rudder post that you can attach... you can 90 of of that with material of your choice.

You can figure it out.
