I'm thinking I would like to install either a new or used foldup ladder to the transom of my 1986 Hunter 23. Any ideas where to find something like this? Thanks, Ray

Ladders in Chandlery?

I found the hanging style ladder, but nothing that mounts permanently and folds up. Am I missing it?

I too searched for a swim ladder

for my 23. I still haven't found one that is both small enough to fit the transom, long enough to reach the water and below so that getting out is not a 'heave' and also affordable. WM has one but it is fairly expensive. One option is a shorter one with an extender; another is the hook over type which can store in the huge cockpit locker...that's what I'm using for now. Brian and Steph have a cute setup on their 25.5.

Try Ebay, just don't bid against me.

There are currently 55 listed there now. I have a hook ladder too, but am looking to buy a folding ladder. I have concerns about taking an unexpected swim since I sail mostly alone and not having a way back into the boat. There are really two styles that I can see. Folding and telescoping. I was hoping that someone might have some thoughts between the two.

Looking into transom ladders

This is a very timely thread as I have been looking into transom ladders and have some information on one that might work for the smaller boats. I don't have it up on the web yet. They are made my Garelick and there are two sizes. The Garelick part numbers are 18017 and 18018. The 18017 is a one-step and the 18018 is a two step. They would run about $89.95 and $102.95 respectively. Check out the Garelick website at http://www.garelick.com/. Take a look at the ladders and let me know if you think they would work for your application. If so, send me an email at bly@sailboatowners.com and I'll work to get them up online asap. I always appreciate product input. Thanks! Bly Berken SailboatOwners.com

Hi Bly, thanks for jumping in!

12048 or 12068 is more like it from Garelick. I hadn't seen that model. The 18018 will be too short for us old fat guys to heave up on! I'll need to get out and do some measuring on the weekend to make sure that there is enough lateral room to clear the rudder and that there is enough transom room to mount it, as well as trying to figure out an appropriate depth of ladder below the W/L.

Thanks Chris!

I'll check into those model numbers as well. Bly

West Marine on Ebay

I got a really nice folding ladder on Ebay from the West Marine store. I think I paid $49 for the ladder and $12 for shipping, about half what it was going for in the West Marine retail store but the exact same model. I will try to find a link..they always have them listed on there.

Thanks for doing the research Chris

My H23 is on the hard, behind a locked gate, under about 3 feet of snow. I'm very interested, but would be purely guessing on the fit.

I couldn't find the thread, BLY,

so I posted a new topic. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250011949501&fromMakeTrack=true This one is a Garelick, I think the same one Bly mentioned, on eBay, good price. Now I've found the thread, go figure! The larger one should fit, but without one in hand I can't be sure. I still have doubts about the depth of this one given the 23's relatively high freeboard. I'll follow up today with measurements.

Measurement

OK, 14" wide by 10" deep is about the max that will fit and clear everythin. It would have to be mounted below the stern light and offset to Stbd to clear the swing of the rudder. The longer one (12068) I found on Garelick should be OK...I'll take the gamble! NO, cancel that, it's too deep. We're back to the one you found. Is there a good extension step out there? BLY, can you price it?
